UKPA (UK Payments Administration)

The UK Payments Administration is the trade body that brings together banks, building societies and card issues, providing them with a forum to discuss non-competitive issues.

It manages all of the UK payment systems, including cash, cheques, debit and credit cards, and automated payments such as Direct Debits, Direct Credits and online transactions.

Originally known as APACS, the UKPA was created in July 2009 and acts as a portal company for each of the respective sectors of UK payment services.

The UKPA also oversaw the introduction of the Chip and Pin system and defines procedural practice for:

  • Debits
  • Standing orders
  • Coin packaging and banknote wrappers
  • Magnetic media interchange
  • EFTPOS device communications
