Albany's customers are direct submitters. This means that by using a piece of software, such as Albany ePAY, payment files are sent to Bacs and no middleman is involved.
By using a Smart Card or HSM (Hardware Security Module), users log in to the software and authorise a file to be sent to Bacs. They can then use these tools to check the progress of submissions and download reports pertaining to them.
An indirect submitter does not send payment information to Bacs themselves, instead relying on a middleman to send it on their behalf. Examples of this might be sending it to a bureau or bank.
A Bacs-approved bureau sends payments on behalf of many indirect submitters, but this is not its only role. Bureaux perform many other time-saving tasks, including the calculation of payroll.
